Pizza Maru & Katsuya: Calgary Pizza With a Korean Twist

Pizza is one of those foods that can be almost anything you want it to be. Classic pepperoni? Absolutely. Hawaiian? Sure. Something completely unexpected? That’s where things get interesting.

At Munchies And Smoke, we recently came across Pizza Maru & Katsuya in Calgary, and what immediately caught our attention was the sheer variety of pizza on the menu.

Located at 4 Royal Vista Way NW #4120, Calgary, AB T3R 0N2, Pizza Maru & Katsuya takes pizza in a decidedly different direction, combining Korean-inspired flavours with the familiar comfort of a great pizza.

This Isn’t Your Typical Pizza Menu

One look at the Pizza Maru menu and you’ll quickly realize there is a lot more happening than pepperoni and cheese.

Their classic pizza selection includes favourites such as Pepperoni, Maru Cheese, Hawaiian, Veggie, Maru Combination, and Margarita, but things get considerably more adventurous from there.

You can move into Korean-inspired combinations like:

  • Korean Bulgogi Pizza
  • Holy Honey Sweet Potato Pizza
  • Potato Pizza
  • Garlic Butter Chicken Pizza
  • Garlic Chicken BBQ Pizza
  • Seasoned Chicken Pizza
  • Chicken Katsu Pizza
  • Signature Shrimbul Pizza
  • Seafood Bay Pizza
  • Crazy Chicken Shrimp Pizza

And that’s still only part of the selection.

Sweet, Savoury, Spicy and Everything In Between

What makes the menu particularly interesting is how willing Pizza Maru is to experiment with flavours.

Take the Holy Honey Sweet Potato Pizza. It combines cheese, cheddar cheese, corn, onion, honey, sweet potato mousse, diced sweet potato, and mayonnaise.

Or consider the Signature Shrimbul Pizza, which combines shrimp and bulgogi with potato chunks, mushrooms, peppers, pickles, sour cream, and a sweet ranch sauce.

If you’re someone who enjoys the combination of sweet and savoury flavours, there are plenty of options to explore.

For those who like some heat, the Crazy Chicken Shrimp Pizza brings chicken and shrimp together with a spicy sauce, while the menu also features other spicy and Korean-inspired options.

How About a 16-Inch Pizza?

If you’re feeding a group, Pizza Maru doesn’t stop at smaller pizzas.

The menu offers 10-inch, 13-inch, and 16-inch pizzas, giving you plenty of flexibility depending on whether you’re grabbing something for yourself or ordering for the whole table.

The 16-inch selection includes options such as Korean Bulgogi, Garlic Chicken BBQ, Signature Shrimbul, Seafood Bay, Holy Honey Sweet Potato, Garlic Butter Chicken, Pepperoni, and Maru Combination.

That’s a lot of pizza to choose from.

And Then There’s Chicago Pizza

If Korean-style pizza isn’t adventurous enough for you, Pizza Maru also offers a Chicago-style selection.

Their Chicago menu includes Real Chicago Original, Real Steak Chicago, Real Seafood Chicago, Real Golden Chicago, Real BBQ Chicago, and Real Hot Chicken Chicago.

It’s a pretty impressive range for one pizza restaurant.

You can go from a traditional-style pizza to a Korean-inspired creation and then jump over to a Chicago-style pie depending on what you’re craving.

Pizza Isn’t All They Do

The name Pizza Maru & Katsuya gives you a pretty good hint that there’s more happening here than pizza.

Pizza Maru’s concept combines Korean-style pizza with Korean chicken, while the Katsuya side brings Japanese-style katsu into the mix. The menu also includes dishes such as topokki, spaghetti, wings, fried chicken, and other comfort foods.

That makes this an especially interesting option when you’re ordering for a group.

One person wants pizza.

Someone else wants chicken.

Another person wants katsu.

And someone else wants topokki.

Everyone can potentially find something they want at the same table.

What Makes Pizza Maru Stand Out?

For us, it’s the creativity.

There are plenty of places where you can order a pepperoni pizza. But when a menu starts combining ingredients like bulgogi, sweet potato, shrimp, chicken katsu, garlic butter, Korean sauces, and even potato chunks with pizza, you’ve entered a completely different pizza experience.

Pizza Maru describes its concept as Korean pizza with rich toppings, while also emphasizing its distinctive dough. Its signature dough incorporates green tea, chlorella, and 12 natural grains, including rye, black rice, Italian millet, and sorghum.

That’s the kind of detail that makes us curious to try something new.

A Pizza Menu Worth Exploring

At Munchies And Smoke, we believe some of the best food discoveries happen when businesses aren’t afraid to step outside the traditional formula.

Pizza Maru & Katsuya is a great example.

Whether you want something familiar like pepperoni, something completely different like Signature Shrimbul, or something sweet and savoury like Holy Honey Sweet Potato, there are plenty of choices to explore.

And if you’re ordering for a group, the variety of pizza sizes and the broader menu of chicken, katsu, topokki, and other dishes makes it even more interesting.
